The Honourable Mr. A. M. Thomson,
Colonial Secretary.
Sir,

F 20 JAN 131
We have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your
letter of even date No. 140 of 1912.
With regard to giving evidence of the "total
restriction of the importation of Opium into China" we fear that it is impossible for us to do so, but it is well known that the
Chinese Authorities are taking steps to totally suppress the smoking of Opium as from the 31st. instant. See news columns of
News today's issue of the Chinese Mail under Canton Hotes.
.
We shall be obliged if your Covernment can see
their way to cable the Home Government in the following terus:-
Chinese Government taking steps to totally suppress Opium smok-
-ing as from the 31st. instant. Chinese Opium dealers here heavily
involved appeal for assistance no outlet for their present stocks
bought from foreign merchants on the faith of the 1911 Agreement
being carried out".
We shall be glad to hear from you whether your
Government will be prepared to send a cable in the above terms.
We have etc.,
(Sd.) Johnson, Stokes and Master.
